David Amm
After graduating from the University of Cape Town in 1993 with a BSc (Chem Eng) degree, David attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar to obtain his BA (P.P.E).
His career with McKinsey and Company began in 1997 when he joined them as an associate. David's role was to lead client teams in solving problems relating to organisation/operations (i.e. cost reduction, organisation design and performance management) for industrial clients (mining, metals and petrochemicals).
In 1999 he was approached to join Massmart, the third largest distributor of consumer goods in sub-Saharan Africa. Its trading brands include Makro, Game, Dion, CCW, Browns, Weirs and Jumbo. He joined Massmart as assistant to the Chairman. This role had three focus areas: advisory/support, investor relations and strategic projects.
After the acquisition of Browns, Weirs and Jumbo David was seconded to CCW in Durban as Commercial Director to support the merger of these businesses. The merged entity achieved turnover of R3.5 billion and EBIT of R100 million through 45 cash-and-carry stores. David's responsibilities were numerous but included line management of IT and group trading activities (cellular).
After the completion of the merger David returned to Johannesburg in 2003 to focus on strategic projects. At the same time he began to explore a number of entrepreneurial opportunities. He left Massmart in June the same year to focus on his own business, Wow Interactive.
Andrew Woodburn
After graduating from the University of Witwatersrand in 1992 with a BSc(Chem Eng), Andrew worked as an engineer in the platinum group metals division of a mining research house. He then attended Oxford University, where he obtained a social studies graduate certificate and an MSC in Development Economics.
In 1995 he served as an associate consultant with Whitehead Mann (London), a leading HR consultancy, doing international recruitment projects and management audits over a host of sectors. He was identified by SAB Miller Plc and brought back to South Africa to perform a corporate strategy role delivering change management and scenario planning to the board. This led to Marketing where his involvement in leading brands (Castle team) and new product development (Alco beverages) provided a platform to leverage his strategic insight and creative flare into the commercial arena.
Andrew then moved to African Bank Investments Limited in 2000 where he was involved with founding the new bank by merging 5 micro finance businesses and creating a complete marketing department, brand and money school.
After the successful establishment as the leading micro finance institution in South Africa and a move to consolidate the collections function, Andrew moved into an entrepreneurial mode and founded a photographic business as well the turn-around of a division in a law firm. This lead into the founding of his own business Wow Interactive.
